Where to play?
Break Away is a 2012 Microgaming title that’s a member of the Sports Star group of slots, together with Football Star and Cricket Star, which are the same games with different skins, even if you wouldn’t say so right away because the game should have been named Ice Hockey Star to follow the same naming conventions. Break Away is cooler, though! Also, this is probably the best of the three Sports Star slots.
Sports Star games aren’t really identical games with different skins, but differ a bit more, and generally it’s all about which sports allowed for the best usage in a slot game. Ice hockey, for example, did well. The Flaming Puck is the Scatter and it’s a symbol that’s really dominant on the reels, as a Scatter should be, and the animations used in this game are just fantastic. This makes Break Away the best of the Sports Star slots when it comes to graphics and theme.
The game uses 9 symbols, all with animated artwork that springs to life when you form a winning paylines, plus a Wild and a Scatter. Wilds are stacked on reels 3, 4 and 5. There are 243 ways to win in this slot game and the minimum bet per spin is $0.50, which is little enough, so even the budget players will be able to afford several hundred spins of this excellnt title.
As usual in Microgaming slots, Break Away features Rolling Reels, which is basically a falling blocks mechanics that gives you re-spins whenever you land a win. The winning symbols will disappear, and they’ll be replaced by new ones falling from above, and this can go on indefinitely as long as there’s a new winning combination that was formed after the blocks fell to fill the vacant spots. Interestingly, even the Scatters can fall, so you can in theory complete your three Scatters with aid of this feature.
There is another feature that’s definitely worth mentioning, and that’s the Smashing Wild feature, where hockey players will appear in front of your board and will make one entire reel Wild! Since this is a slot game with 243 ways to win, you’ll get the best results from this feature the more to the left your Wild reel is. The reel will remain Wild for that one spin only, and there are no Rolling Reels in effect.
The free spins game is rewarding enough, and you need at least three Scatters to trigger it. You’ll get 15, 20 or 25 free spins for three, four or five Scatters. Rolling Reels are active during the free spins game, so this helps greatly with the wins, and you’ll get numerous re-spins. The key difference here is that the Rolling Reels will have an increasing multiplier after each re-spin win, with a maximum of 10x which you’ll get if you hit five wins in a row during Rolling Reels. This makes the free spins game very exciting and very rewarding. The maximum possible win during the base game is 120,000 coins, and during the free spins this climbs to 240,000 coins.
Break Away is one of the finest slots in the Microgaming portfolio, as it strikes a nice balance between the frequency and quality of wins, and the potential of winning big in the free spins game. Rolling Reels feature is the key here, and Break Away really benefits greatly from it. Theoretical return to player (RTP) is 96.42%, just proving that this is a quality title.Click to collect: 200% up to €200 signup bonus
